Spencer’s opens its first West Bengal Hyper store at Durgapur

The Kolkata-based, Rs. 11,000 crore, RPG Group which has interests in power generation, real estate and retail, is betting big on retail. Its 109 years old Spencer’s Retail, claimed to be pioneer in the organised retail space, openend its Hyper stores’ innings in West Bengal with the launch of a 16,000 square feet big outlet at City Centre in Durgapur. This is ninth such hyper store of the retail chain across the country. Under one roof, it stocks around 20,000 products under different categories including groceries, fresh fruits, vegetables, home appliances and white goods.

The new store was inaguarated by Dr R.P. Goenka, Chairman Emeritus, RPG Group.

Spencer’s is presently operating 135 retail outlets across 27 cities in the country, comprising five Spencer’s Superstores, 104 Spencer’s Daily stores, two Spencer’s Fresh stores and 15 Spencer’s Express stores.

The power generation and distribution major is betting big on retail with plans to rollout 2,000 retail stores by 2009 and 4,000 retail stores by 2011.
