Delhi Govt. asks retail chains to pay mandi tax on prchase of agri-products; cites APMR Act

June 25th, 2007 · No Comments

The state Government of Delhi has come heavily on big retail chains and asked them to comply with the provisions of Delhi Agriculture Produce Marketing Regulation Act, which mandates payment of 1% fees on every commercial purchase of agri products including vegetables, fruits and milk-based products like khoya.

These chains escape the payment of fees as they buy their requirements from the open market and bypass the Mandis like Ajadapur Sabzi Mandi.

“Big retail chains like Reliance and Big Bazaar, which are spreading their branches in a big way across the city, can not escape from paying our mandatory marketing fees,” said Braham Yadav, Chairman, Delhi Agriculture Marketing Board.

These chains evade fees as they buy their needs from the open market instead of the government-operated vegetable markets such as Azadapur Sabzi Mandi, added Yadav.

While, retail chains like Reliance and Big Apple, according to Yadav, have begun paying the fees, Haldiram retail chain has yet to begin paing this fees on their purchase of Khoya.
