“Spinach” owners acquire Bangalore-based food & grocery chain “S-Mart”

September 4th, 2007 · 1 Comment

Spinach_logoWadhawan Food Retail (WFRL), owned by Delhi-based Housing Finance major DHFL, has bought “S-Mart,” a retail chain having 13 stores operating in upmarket residential areas of Bangalore. WFRL owns “Spinach,” retail chain, a  food and grocery convenience retail stores chain, that operates stores in three formats in Mumbai and Pune.

The group has planned an ambitious target of setting up 1,500 stores in 90 cities across the country, both through organic and inorganic routes.

After loosing out to Mukesh Ambani  owned Reliance Retail in acquiring the Gujarat-based, 54 stores, supermarket retail chain “Adani Supermarkets,” the group has embarked on a buying spree.

This group is mostly focusing on buying city specific, regional, food and grocery retail chains, though, it had to also acquire a lifestyle chain as the part of a buyout deal.

Apart from buying out the Hindustan Unilever owned Mumbai-based ‘home-delivery’ business “Sangam Direct,” it took over the control of Mumbai-based Maratha Co-operative Stores, this June.

Close on heels of this acquisition, Wadhwan group went on to acquire Delhi-based retail chains “Sabka Bazaar” and “THS-The Home Store.” These chains were managed by Home Stores India Limited.

While “Sabka Bazaar” operates food & grocery retail chain of 35 stores in Delhi-NCR, “The Home Store,” is a home decor and home accessories lifestyle retail chain operating from nine cities including Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Indore, Bangalore and Pune.

I have been taking my regular groceries from S-Mart, at Hennur Main Road Bangalore for over 2 years. I deposited Rs. 160/- for mineral water and have been taking the drinking water from them. Since I was not well, I could not go there for over 15 days. Now I find that the stores is closed. I phoned to their number 09341477013, a lady responded and said that the stores is closed and could not give me any other details. Kindly let me know whom should I contact to get the deposit back (customer care address). I can get water from elsewhere.
