Reliance ‘Fresh,’ which has planned to initially open four stores in Dehradun, the state capital of Uttrakhand, witnessed opposition of local traders and wholesalers, who as a mark of protest to the entry of retail giant in the state, closed vegetable mandis.
Earlier, in the face of traders’ protests in Uttar Pradesh, the state government had ordered closure of all standalone food and grocery stores run by corporate houses.
Traders in Dehradun were protesting against what they called “invasion” of Reliance into their daily business.
Uttarakhand Vegetable and Trade Association, which is representing the traders’ interests in the state, also submitted a memorandum to B.C. Khanduri, the state Chief Minister. While demanding a ban on Reliance’s entry in retail business, they warned to launch a mammoth agitation, if the entry of big business houses in retail was not banned by the government.
