US recalls over 11 million Chinese made items in 2007, over 1.3 million of which during this month

September 30th, 2007 · No Comments

Although toy maker Mettel was forced earlier to apologise for blaming some its toy suppliers in China due to faulty toy design for which Chinese were not responsible, the process of recalling Chinese made goods in the US, particularly toys for kids that are painted with dangerous lead paint, continues to go on unabated.

While total recalls in the first nine months of 2007 (January September) were for more than 11 million (11,395,350) pieces, the number in September, 2007 alone was over 1.3 million (1,375,050).

It is interesting to note that while American regulatory agencies, and even retailers, are cautious of potential harm that  some chemical or components could cause to the safety of human beings and some times even animals, there are no safety standards laid down at least for toys in our country. May be authorities, would wake upto the lurking threat.

According to US Consumer Product Safety Commission report, while, Mattel recalled 675,000 Barbie accessories and 98,900 Fisher-Price toys, Target recalled 350,000 gardening tools, and RC2 recalled 200,000 Thomas & Friends toys, in September, 2007.

About 24,350 pieces of various junk jewelry items for kids were also recalled during the month.
