Bharti Retail to foray into NCR; plans 30 stores in 2009

December 31st, 2008 · 7 Comments

Bharti Retail, the retail venture of telecom behemoth Bharti Enterprises, after setting up 20 retail stores in the Northern states of Punjab and Haryana, is soon foraying into the metro market of Delhi.

Bharti, according to a Mint report, is expected to set up a total of 30 stores in the National Capital Region (NCR) in the next one year. These stores, apart from the national capital, will come up in thriving consumption centres of Gurgaon, Gaziabad, and Noida, among others.

While, the retail initiative of Mittals, unlike its most big-ticket rivals like Ambanis (Reliance), Birlas (More), who in their first year of operations have set up more than 500 stores each, has not grown fast, it appears to be growing steadily on the strength of support of its back-end services.

It is not for nothing that Walmart — the world’s largest retailer and Bharti’s advisor for technical and sourcing services– puts a lot of emphasise on strong supply chain management as main driver of retail chain growth.

Bharti group, which had made its foray into retail business from Ludhiana– the home town of its promoters Mittals –  in April, 2008, has in the past nine months rolled out a total of 20 front-end retail stores under the umbrella brand name of “Easyday.”

Of the 20 stores, 19 are small format convenience stores. The retailer has also recently launched a mid-sized hypermarket format (supermarket) store called “Easyday Market TM.” The supermarket store measuring around 25,000 sq ft was launched about three weeks ago in Ludhiana.

The new stores in NCR will be a combination of convenience, mid-sized supermarkets, and large format hypermarket stores. While, supermarkets will measure between 25,000 and 40,000 sq ft, hypermarket stores will measure at least 75,000 sq ft, says the report.

Wal-mart is right in making sure that the back end operations of their venure are strong before expanding. Unlike many retailers who have had random expansions and are now trying to shut down stores/lay off employees/finding cost cutting methods, Bharti-Walmart are strengthening their base.

The Bhartis are very strong on SOPs & will do a lot better with good associates. Needs more robust HR. HR took lot of bad calls in firing people in a very short period of time. They are heavy on middle management. Their corporate baggage is very expensive.

I agree with Anju. Bharti Top Management is very expensive. Thus they are firing too many into middle/low management. Plus they are also firing for no reason. This seems unethical as when one dont have job in hand, its that more tough to get a new one, esp in this kind of bad economy. Mr Suni Bharti Mittal is not aware of this I believe, cos he is a man of principles.

They should hire with the best possible match & fire only if its an integrity issue. Otherwise people will stop trusting Bhartis. Also atleast give one year post training, to judge the potential or performance of the candidate. Also do not pass on the pressure of wrong/bad/delayed deliveries pressure on SM or its aftermaths!
