Imposing and Ingenious. Valuable info available for citizens of Retail Republic. Much needed in this clutter.

Can you please provide some information on ‘Price Points’. viz. In Western countries, retail prices are often called psychological prices or odd prices, a little less than a round number, e.g. $9.95. In Chinese societies, prices are generally either a round number or sometimes a lucky number!

It would be good if you can add a ‘Retailing Glossary’ for ready reference specially for greenhorns like us.

It is nice to receive information about the growing retail sector at one place. I am keenly interested in the growth and news from this sector as I am providing medical services to the retail industry in Ahmedabad since last 2 years.

This sector has become the most active sector which touches daily needs of the people at most competitive price. It is providing thousands of jobs to the youth too.

    Best wishes.

    Dear Sirs,

    Great job in knowledge management.

However very less is said about Rural Retail.

Can you separate Urban retail chains and rural retail chains operating and their plans?

Hi….I feel it would be useful if you could have a directory of retail contacts (b2b). There is a lot of information on manufacturers however not much info on how manufacturers can get in touch with larger retail chains. I work for a french sporting company and have been doing a lot of legwork going around to stores however store managers are not very co-operative when it comes to giving out procurement contacts.

thank you…….. for all the great efforts, its worth appreciable………………. a small suggestion……why dont u give international retail updates …………..where they stand and how they perform in the economic turmoil…… :)

—’Thanks for your suggestion. We try to include a lot of international retail news reports. Even, today we are carrying on on Microsoft’s entry into retail. We will, however, try to increase their frequency in future.

Thanks for such latest information on retail. I am final year MBA student and doing project on “Rise and fall of retail giants in India” , this information will surely increase my marks.
It will be a great help to me if you give me some points on where the giants, like reliance, bharti subhiksha, big baazar have failed in past.

  • Mangala // Apr 15, 2009 at 9:05 am

Good information. But I would have also liked to see articles on how and what retailers can do increase sales, reduce costs and how technology can enable it.

    To

    The Manager In charge
    Star Bazaar
    Andheri (Lokandwala)

This is bring your attention that on 18th April 2009 I had visited “Star Bazaar” in Crystal Point-Andheri(Lokhanwala) along with my 2 years and 3 months old child. While purchasing my grocery I also got Lux Body wash along with Lakme sunscreen. As my child has the tendency to open the lid of the Lux Body Wash and spill it allover himself and on the floor I took it and put in inside my bag which I intend to bill. Later I shopped for rest of the items .I made a purchase for more than 2500 along with Rs.500 approx in VCD/DVD in Hallmark. In between I got a call from my home that my maid ‘s son is unwell and need to rushed to hospital so immediately leaving my shopping half way I went to the billing counter and settled for items purchased by me. In that tizzy I missed to bill the two items which I had put in my bag.

Post my billing while I was making an exit I voluntarily stopped at the security guard and showed my bill and there I was stopped by one of the supervisor who said you didn’t not bill for the two items which you kept in your bag and me took to the “Private Room” which is located near to exit to discuss this issue. There I interacted with few executive of your department of which one guy (named-ASHISH) was front ending this case .I told him very clearly that I am regular customer of this store and on an average I purchase worth Rs.2000 to Rs.5000 every by monthly from STAR BAZAAR and I didn’t not intend to steal the two products rather wanted to bill the same but due to some emergency I missed to bill the items .I told Ashish very clearly that I know it is a mistake on my part for which I am ready to put this incident in writing and I will make sure that next time this does not happen in near future. But Ashish out rightly refused to hear my case and said I have seen you from CCTV picking the items so you need to pay 10 times the penalty of the values of the items which was only Rs.285 post discount. I even told him why I need to steal the petty product where I have already made purchases worth Rs.2500+Rs500 ( Hallmark) and I myself is against the concept of “shop lifting”. This is just a mistake due to oversight for which I will put the entire incident in writing and pay the MRP of the product.

Post our argument Ashish asked me to write an apology letter and to force me to pay 5 times the value of the product as thumb rule to handle this kind of situation without any proper bill for the penalty they charged. So I paid Rs1188 in excess as ”Penalty” against Rs.285 and asked to give me in writing that this amount is for penalty which Ashish gave in writing .I felt very very humiliated and mentally tortured as Ashish and his team was very very uncooperative considering the fact that I have come with my child who was put sit in the trolley for half an hour and I being a regular customer to this store and this being a genuine mistake from my side without having any malafide intention . I respect the rules and regulation of any Organization and I also know that every super marked is equipped with CCTV and all the acts of the customers are monitored. However I deeply regret the way Ashish and his team handled this case as they didn’t listen to the back ground and very stubborn in their behavior.

I request the management of the Star Bazaar to re-look into this a matter once again so that at least in near future innocent customer like me will not come under the “Trap of Humiliation and Agony “ the way I had to face along with my child. I understand and appreciate the efforts of the Ashish and his team for being proactive to observe that acts of the customer however every situation differ from case to case basis and they should have handled this case more politely without harming my self respect and esteem and putting my child to unease which they fail to do .I would like to meet the Manger in charge of the Star Bazaar in person and would like to discuss this event in DETAIL which has been very painful and traumatic for me and for my child as well so that the nobody in near future dare not deal with other customer the way they dealt with me.

    Thanks and regards

i am very much impressed with the star hyper market as it is convenient for me, but as i am used to tesco, asda, and all the other there is a lack of customer services. This is not a problem with just one supermarket but with all for me. If i had to run my business i learnt over the year of experience that the customer is always right. with that attitude in mind you will do well.

    Hi IndiaRetail Team,

You have a comprehensive data on the Indian retail scenario. As students, we are putting together a report on the opportunities that lie in a niche segment in retail industry, any suggestions.
